Beautiful Events: Tosin's Red Hot and Sexxy Birthday and Graduation Celebration!!!!

Thursday, October 4, 2012

Hello Readers!!

When Tosin approached us about designing her Birthday party, we were thrilled because this would give us an opportunity to design something different from weddings.  She was very specific about her color scheme and also added that this would be a grand celebration as she was also graduating.

Now Red is an interesting color, we think it does not get enough credit for its warmth and vibrancy and not to talk about the romance it exudes.  Well I am a pink girl, but would gladly take on Red.  The goal was to create a party atmosphere with red being the main color and ivory, the palette on which it rests upon.  Neutral lighting to tone down the ambiance and lots of candlelight for intimacy.  Needless to say, it was one SEXXY Partaaaay!!! The birthday girl and graduant was exteremely pleased.

Tosin thanks again for letting us design your event and thanks again to all our vendor partners for working with us on this event:

Let's Have Cake!! Vendor Feature with Sweet Thing Black Orchid

Monday, February 20, 2012

Hello Readers,

As we all know, next to food and decor the cake is the NEXT most important things guests look forward to. It is pretty much the centerpiece of the wedding! So many couples take their time and try to pick out the PERFECT cake design to go with their theme and decor. It is always very refreshing to see wedding vendors that go above and beyond by not just providing a service, but produce works of art. Sweet Thing Black Orchid is one of those vendors! I had the opportunity to interview Melanie of Sweet Thing Black Orchid and it was a joy interviewing her! Read, comment, and let us know what you think!

Memi: Can you tell us about yourself and how you got into the bakery business?

Melanie: I have always been a creative soul. I originally came to the Washington DC area to study fashion design at Howard University and ended up changing my major to a medical one...design called me through the years and I ended up back at it- creating cakes and floral arrangements. I started Sweet Thing Black Orchid as a coordinating company in 1999 as the result of my own wedding....I did not have a coordinator nor the creative and unique design items that I love so much now. I promised myself if I could somehow redo my wedding, I would make sure that everything was well put together and more unique. I live that everyday vicariously through my brides now. I quickly added the confection and the floral divisions to the company in 2001, and they have taken on a life of their own. I have been formally trained by Wilton USA and learned from famed cake artist Sharon Zambito. Through the years I honed my craft through practice, practice and more practice and a fearless approach to design.

Memi: What is the significance of your company's name?

Melanie: When you think of our name, we want it to do two things...
1. Make you curious enough to ask us about our name so that we can tell you our story and inspire you to want your own unique creation.
2. More important we want our name to put visions into your head of the two distinct elements that make up our company - Sweet Thing, think of silly and crazy creative designs. This part of the name represents the confection division of the company.....it is inspired by all things a little silly and whimsical, Think Willy Wonka. Black Orchid, think rare and exotic. The Black Orchid is one of the World's most rare and elegant flowers and that part of the name encompasses the floral design and coordination divisions of the company. We want potential clients to know that with us, your floral and design needs will be just that, unique and elegant.

Memi: What do you love the most about making wedding cakes?

Melanie: The best part of making a wedding cake is far after the cake is complete and in fact gone. When clients call and tell us they loved their cake or sent happy pictures of their events. That's why we do this....their satisfaction is everything to our team.

Memi: Where do you draw inspiration from?

Melanie: Inspiration comes from exactly everywhere. I designed a cake once after staring, for an hour, at the way a ladies shirt fell in a pool around her waist. It had the most unique rippling effect. That cake turned out to be my most favorite cake of all times with the bottom tier emulating the ripples. No matter what I see, no matter where I go, I see cake in everything I look at.

Memi: Do you have a favorite cake flavor? If so, what is it?

Melanie: Yes, of course! My favorite cake flavor is "Wedding Cake". It is clean and pure and very refreshing. It has the smell of vanilla but the light taste of Almond. So delightful.

Memi: How do you make sure that your company and cakes stand out amongst the numerous options brides have for bakers?

Melanie: First and foremost, we make sure we interpret our client's vision for their cake and not our own. So many artist impose what they feel safe designing for you - on you. We try our hardest to give you what you want. When we have Carte Blanche....the sky is the limit to what we can create. We don't want our cakes to be your mother's wedding cake (although what was once old is now new again). We never design the exact same cake twice and every one of our cakes has a name....whether we name it our our clients do.

Memi: What are some of your favorite wedding cake trends past, present or future? What trends do you hate the most?

Melanie: Ah, I love this question...My favorites have been jewels....big chunky juicy blinging jewels on cakes...so lovely. Also faded, ombre techniques (where colors go from light to dark). Airbrushing on cakes...I simply adore this technique in any fashion.
Trends that I hate - well this is not possible for me to answer. I see each cake as a representation of the individuals I am designing for. I see their personalities and believe it or not, their unique mannerisms in their cakes so to say I hate something about their cake, well, you get the picture
.

Memi: Where do you see Sweet Thing Black Orchid in the next 5 years? 10 years?

Melanie: On top baby! We have actively been partnering with some of the major hotel chains in the DC market so we plan to grow our hold in that arena which will provide the means to expand our foot print with private clientele as well. We also plan to open a bigger and better store front in 2013. Location TBD.

Memi: What is some advice you would give to a planning bride who is totally lost on choosing a wedding cake?

Melanie: Due diligence! Take your time, do your research, check out pricing options, read reviews, ask every possible question you can to the potential designer, then ask 10 more. There are plenty of cake designers out here. This day is one of the most special days in your life. Make sure you entrust your cake, as well us all other elements of your wedding, to someone who is as concerned about your wedding day happiness as you are.....and who can deliver....and I don't mean drop off!

Memi: Thanks sooo much for cooperating and speaking with us!!

Melanie: My pleasure Memi, thank you.

Ah!Mazing Vendor Feature: Ink Hearts

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Hello Readers!!!

It has been quite a while since we've had a vendor feature so I'm really excited to introduce you to Ata, the founder of InkHearts! InkHearts specializes in couture invitations and stationary. When I came across InkHearts I immediately fell in love with the beautiful color combinations and the various paper textures she uses to make her invitations stand out amongst the rest. Read on for the interview I had with her! Thanks Ata for taking time out of your schedule and chatting with us!

BCG: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the stationary business?
Ata: As a teenager, I always found myself dabbling into things that involved using my hands. My interests spanned from sewing, baking, hairstyling and the like, until  I found my niche with creating invitations. In 2008, I designed a masked theme invitation for my 30th Birthday Party and the feedback and inquiries I received from folks gave me the extra push I needed to start off the business officially.

BCG: What is behind the name "Ink Hearts"?
Ata: The way the name, "Ink Hearts" came about is sort of off the wall. My siblings and I were hanging out one day and I brought up the topic of wanting to register my stationery company but could not come up with a name. They went to work and within thirty minutes, the name Ink Hearts was borne. In simplest terms, the name Ink hearts signifies putting pen to paper to create designs borne out of love.

BCG: What motivates you every day? As a female entrepreneur I am sure you are busy with so many things and have a lot on your plate, what keeps you going?
Ata: I am pretty sure that we all have several things going on in our daily lives and the truth is sometimes, we all need that extra push to keep going. That is where my family comes into play. I am motivated every day by my family, particularly my children. They make me want to do better, strive for more in life.

BCG: Where do you seek inspiration for your designs?
Ata: Inspiration could pretty much come from anywhere. Sometimes, it could be my clients, functions I have attended or more recently, I was absolutely inspired by a recent trip I took with my girlfriends to Marbella, Spain. There were streams of complementary patterns and bright colors everywhere. It got my mind working overtime so much so that I could not wait to get back and put it all together!

BCG: How do you manage to stay competitive? In an industry like the wedding industry there are sooo many people doing EXACTLY what you do? How does Ink Hearts stand out?
Ata: There is so much talent out there, it' ridiculous and I mean that in a very good way. However, I still think that there is always room for improvement and innovation. We (Inkhearts) pride ourselves on excellent customer service and that personal touch. Which ill not only make us have repeat clients but also rope in referrals. Without advertising that much, I' say 90% of our clients have been through referrals. In fact, we have worked with several clients indifferent parts of the world without meeting them face-to-face. I think that says a lot about what we do and what we are about.

BCG: What kind of couple is an "Ink Heart" couple?? How would you describe the market you cater to?
Ata: Our clientele, typically are generation x and millennial folks, who want to do away with cookie cutter stationery and are ready for something new and different. We also create event stationery as well and do not limit our work to just wedding stationery.

BCG: What do you love the MOST about what you do?
Ata: I feel blessed to be able to do what I do, sometimes putting in long hours but still loving every minute of it. A week ago, we received rave reviews from a ouple that were so overjoyed with their invitation suites. That always puts aWIDE smile on my face.

BCG: Do you have a piece that is your favorite? If so what is it and why?
Ata: You know, I havent really identified one as my favorite but lately, the gate card and pocket card designs are becoming client faves.

BCG: Who is your dream client? Who would you loveee to work with? Could be celebrity, public figure, friend or family, whoever! And why?
Ata: We strive to treat all our clients the same and provide that personalized experience. However, I will know I am going places when we serve our first celebrity client.

BCG: Where do you see Ink Hearts in the next 5 years? 10 years?
Ata: I am so optimistic about the future of Inkhearts and God willing, our dreams shall come to pass. In the next few months, we will be opening our studio/paperie store in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria, which I am overly happy about. To be honest, it is a bit scary but like the saying goes, you never know til you try? We are taking that leap to see where the road leads us.

A 10% discount will be offered to anyone who places an order of 200 or more invitation suites by JANUARY 31st

A 15% discount will be offered to anyone who places their order of 200 or more invitation suites by DECEMBER 31th

Back to Beautiful Events - Part 1: Natalie's Breakfast At Tiffany's Bridal Shower

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Hello Everyone!!!!  So I am back to blogging (YES!!!!!)  This has been an amazing year as I knew it would be.  We welcomed a precious little one in summer and boy!!!!!! has it been busy with baby and events.  Memi has been doing a fabulous job on the blog and we are definitely blesssed to have her.  She will definitely still be blogging as she has soooooooo many exciting things to share, including her wedding planning diary. In the meantime, since the season has slowed down a bit, it gives me time to pop in on the blog and share a few things.

So today I would like to share an amazing event that we planned and designed last year.  The inspiration for this event was a classic movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" because that is just the kinda girl Natalie is; very classy and ladylike.  The goal was to put on a soiree celebrating Natalie, as well as the ladies invited to the shower.

Again thanks to Timi of Skratchaus Studio for the beautifully themed invitations.  We found Tiffany colored boxes to hold the invitations and wrapped it up like a gift and presented it to each invited guest.  Yes! each invited guest got a "Friends & Co" Invitation gift box; personalized with their names, that gave them details to the event as well as as a brooch favor which they were asked to wear to the event in honor of the beautiful bride to be.

From the invitation to the signature drinks to the centerpieces this event was planned out with the theme in mind as you would see.  By the way some of you may have already seen pictures from the event taken by the absolutely incredible Dotun, however here are a few more images that remind me again of  what an absolutely beautiful event this was.

Next week we'll feature more pictures from the event, so stay tuned.
Thanks for stopping by and happy blogging folks and stay beautiful folks,
AJ
