How to Thursdays: What is Your Wedding Style? Part 1

Thursday, February 10, 2011

So, he gave you the proposal of your dreams and the ring you've been drooling over for months now. What more could a girl ask for? Life is AH!Mazing! Mixed in with all the "Congratulations", "I'm so Happy for YOU!" and the "You guys are such a cute couple" You get the reality check question..."When is the wedding" or like our people will say "When are we coming to eat rice?" Some people get so wrapped up in the beauty of the proposal and the transition from girlfriend to fiancee' that they forget "fiancee-dom" (yes I made that word up, lol) is something like a blissful purgatory. It is a limbo between courtship and marriage.

For many people this period is coupled with the daunting task of actually PLANNING a wedding! There are some girls who've dreamt about this their whole lives (like me) then there are some who have never heard the name "Vera Wang" let alone the difference between an empire waist gown and a drop waist gown. So I plan on having a series labeled "How-To Thursdays" every Thursday you can come here and see some tips or helpful tidbits to make wedding planning just a LITTLE bit easier for our planning readers.

Today I want to talk about choosing your wedding style. A wedding should reflect the bride and groom's styles and preferences. This can be done in a number of ways. Through colors, venues, wedding dress, grooms suit, reception decor, etc. My focus today will be on how to select colors and what different colors represent. I will talk about details such as attire, cake, flowers, and lighting that can all showcase your wedding style on future posts.

How do I choose my colors? What do these colors even represent?
Some people go the route of their "favorite colors" which is not a bad idea because your favorite color is a part of you and can say a lot about your personality. Some go with what they THINK will look nice together, while others go with what seems to be the color of the season (Side Bar: Purple was so in last year).  Really, there is no wrong way to choose your wedding colors because I totally believe that any group of colors can be fused together in an event design IF DONE CORRECTLY (Key Word). I've seen so many different color schemes come together beautifully!

Here is a little insight on what different colors represent and some pics to give you an idea of how it could be done :-)

RED

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags.

ORANGE

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

YELLOW

Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings.

GREEN

Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope.

BLUE

Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.

PURPLE

Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.

WHITE

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. White can represent a successful beginning.

When choosing your colors remember that the colors above are the most basic colors that people use, but there are a range of hues and shades in each color category. For example there is a significant difference between sky blue and navy blue, so do some color research and select what you think will work best for you and the wedding style you are trying to achieve.  When selecting your colors think about what these colors represent, what they mean to you and your fiancee' and most importantly how will they blend together! Below are some unusual color blends that you don't see often and most people wouldn't think to pair together, but they work when DESIGNED right!

I always thought when I got married the colors in my wedding would be in the red, black, and white family. Yet,I'm leaning towards colors of royalty! The purple(deep, lavender, etc),gold, cremes, and anything regal! After all we are Kings and Queens aren't we? lol
Great idea and great post Mems!!! :)

Thank you SOOO much Chavon for the comment!

But yes I DEF agree! Purple really does give you that feeling that you are at an event fit for royal heirs and heiresses when it is put together well! But I've also seen some BEAUTIFULL red, black, and white weddings! So dont TOTALLY forget about it! At the end of the day you are going to go with something you and your fiancee both LOVE and what you feel will bring your personalities across on that special day!

@SweetandSensible

You would be surprised!! Like I said in the post, it really is ALL about how you put it together. You dont have to have EVERYYYthing peach and purple. You could have either color as your primary and throw in subtle hints of the other color.

Something like this:

@ Sweetandsensible, Peach and Purple are beautiful colors together. Think of orange and purple, peach is a derivative color of orange, so it'll just have a softer look.

I personally love white with any other color, think white and hot pink, white and purple, white and aqua blue, white and gold, white and silver or white and black and hotpink!!!!!
