LET'S TALK ABOUT IT: To Hire a Planner or Not???

Friday, May 27, 2011

When it comes to planning a wedding there is a LOT more that goes into it than meets the eye. Many people feel like hiring a wedding planner is an unnecessary expense. They much rather get family friends and bridesmaids to plan the day and handle all the logistics. While there are some people that would much rather put the responsibility of such a big occasion into the hands of a professional. I think it is a choice the couple has to make themselves BUT I do NOT think it is something that should be cut out because of cost. I say this because the amount of stress that a planner can alleviate it may just be well worth it. I personally think people underestimate the ability of planners and what they do, so this is why we are asking you guys this question.

Well I gues it depends. When I got married years ago planners were not as publicized as they used to be. So my aunt helped out. I can say from experience that it was NOT the best decision I made. My wedding turned out to be a circus and my aunt did the exact opposite of what I asked. She was more about pleasing family members than making me happy. So things didn"t flow like I wanted it to and I was very disappointed. So if I were to do it again, I would hire a planner, someone who knows exactly what they are doing and who would be able to execute exactly what I want. To brides to be, I say it is a neccessary cost, save yourself the hassle and drama.

I've always had mixed feelings about this. I'm more of a DIY kinda girl. I've always found that its best way to get things done EXACTLY the way YOU PICTURED it. But a wedding is a whole different story. I think I would have to give in and hire a planner. You're paying for their services so they should essentially be obligated to deliver what it is that you want. When it comes to family and friends, spare yourself the drama of being upset with a loved one because they just didn't get it right either because Auntie Lagbaja said do it this way or that way, or they forgot something because they didn't want to miss something at the wedding. I was the MOH at a close friends wedding AND also "the wedding planner." I missed the rehearsal, I was texting throughout the ceremony begging people to check on things for me, I had to hop out of the limo because of traffic and run a few blocks ahead in my dress and shoes to make sure things were ready for the bridal parties arrival at the hall, I barely got to dance at the reception... It was stressful and tiring. On the actually day, you want your family and friends celebrating with you and enjoying the wedding, not running up and down trying to make sure everything's in place and miss the best moments of the most important day of your life. GET A PLANNER or at least a DAY OF COORDINATOR!

Thanks BCG for starting this discussion topic. I think every bride who wants to have a stress free wedding should get at least a DOC (Day of Coordinator), because while your wedding may not require as much details where you would need a planner, (especially if some of your friends have recently gotten married, they can recommend the vendors they used) on the day of the wedding, you want someone to make sure the day runs smoothly. However here is where it gets tricky, if you decide not to hire a planner you better be sure you can read every single contract you get from your vendors as well as have great negotiating skills. Sometimes when vendors know you don't have an advocate in the wedding industry they can stick you with some very FUNNY and SHADY deals. Just some food for thought. So like I said definitely get a DOC, it'll save a lot of headache in the long run.

It should be interesting to see what people have to say. As for me I have seen too many weddings gone wild. So for me not to have a planner would be setting myself up big time. I am going to hire a planner though who knows what the heck they are doing. The truth is some of these people disguise themselves as "planners" and their idea of planning is just standing around and yelling or running around all frantic. They absolutely have NO freaking clue. I will be sure to do my homework and hire the best, because I want my wedding to be stress free and flawless.
